Oranssi’s Tapanila House is located right next to the train station. It is a two-storey, mansard-roofed, small apartment building of log and timber construction. It is heated by oil-fired water heating, which makes it the only centrally heated house in Oranssi. It has six apartments and a full-height, multi-purpose basement. The apartments range in size from 42 to 65 m², four of which are two-bedroom apartments and two are three-bedroom apartments. The basement has a laundry room, a communal shower room and a workshop. The building is protected by the sr-2 designation, which means that no major changes to the façade are allowed. On the other side of the courtyard is a sauna building with another common shower room and a fireplace room.
The building, known as the Leino House, was originally built in 1876 or 1914, according to various sources, and originally served as a Finnish-language elementary school and a lecturer’s residence. It has been extended at various stages and in the 1930s it was enlarged into a small wooden block of flats. The building became the property of the City of Helsinki in the mid-1990s, when it was scheduled for demolition. However, it was decided to preserve the building and it was bought by Oranssi Asunnot in 1998.
Oranssi began renovating the building in the spring of 1998. The renovation was largely carried out by young people. Incoming residents were involved in the renovation for a long time before the apartments were occupied. The renovation included replacing insulation, water pipes, drains, additional ventilation ducts and an oil burner. The house’s metal sheet roof was also replaced.
The yard sauna and the storage building were built by Oranssi in the early 2000s. The sauna was assembled from an old log frame for the fireplace. The sauna and the washroom are of log construction.
