Kipparlahti House (previously known as Kulis) is located in Herttoniemi, next to the community gardens. The building is a single-storey, log structure. It is protected in the zoning plan with the sr-2 designation. The house has five apartments, four of which are two-bedrooms and one triple, ranging in size from 54 to 79 m². The apartments have wood heating and the residents also use electric heaters.
The original history of the building is not known. According to family sources, it was built as a residential building at the turn of the last century in the town centre, but was moved to Herttoniemi in the 1920s, where it has served as a military hospital, a summer colony and a day-care centre, among other things. In the last phase, before Oranssi took over, the building served as modest city rental apartments. The building had been under threat of demolition since the 1950s, and in 1995 it was in a very poor state when the City of Helsinki offered it for rent to Oranssi. The lease contract stipulated that Oranssi would renovate the building.
The renovation was carried out in 1996-97. The work lasted from April to January and involved ten young people, in addition to the residents, through the Oranssi Workshop. The building was divided into five new apartments, which meant that the fire insulation had to be improved. The apartments were equipped with their own kitchens and toilets. The chimneys were renovated and the flues slammed. The two missing fireplaces were replaced by new storage stoves. The tin roof was partially replaced and patched. The lower part of the façade cladding was replaced, and the logs were replaced or patched where necessary. Drainage, electricity and ventilation systems were replaced. In addition, a new courtyard building was built in the courtyard to provide common sauna and shower facilities and a laundry room. The old outhouse was renovated into a wood shed.
The building was finally purchased by Oranssi Asunnot from the City of Helsinki in 2008. The renovation work continued in 2010-11, when the house underwent a facade renovation. In 2016, the tin roof of the house was replaced. In the same autumn, the house was also connected to the municipal sewage network.
