Oranssi has its origins in the squats of the early 1990s, which drew attention to the housing shortage among young people. Young squatters decided to take the lead and create housing they could afford themselves.
Over the years, the activities have expanded in fruitful cooperation with the City of Helsinki. The City has first rented and later sold to Oranssi Asunnot its old wooden buildings, and the Oranssi youth have renovated protected wooden houses into rental apartments suitable for themselves.
